Hi all. I am a mechanical engineering student looking to machine some darts for a project with the "twist" being that the flight is made such that they rotate. Does anyone know of a machinable alloy of tungsten, or more probably of a dart specialist or hobby store in the bay area? I'm over in Palo Alto. Thanks!

Darts/math quiz on the BBC!

Just saw this on the Beeb today. The British government is recognizing the contribution darts make to maths skills. What a great argument against electronic darts! (Hey, if that's all you play, you're still welcome in the tribe... but personally, it's just not my thing--I'm old-fashioned).

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/4601810.stm

It requires a Flash (web browser) plugin, which most of you probably have whether you know it or not.

And no, I didn't get a perfect score. My excuse: I was at work, in a hurry, and haven't played darts in over a year because no one plays steel-point darts in this town!!

What darts do you throw?

Just curious what you have in your arsenal. What darts you love, hate and wish you had. Any good leads on places to buy on-line? How about dart cases?

I started out throwing 27g. Hammer heads and grew to really dislike them. Aside from being so heavy they have an inherent rattle that drove me nuts. Now I’m throwing 25g. Black Widows with moveable points and I absolutely adore them.

I want to go with a lighter weight though (around 22g.) and I’m curious about the “Smartest Dart II”. Have any of you had any experience with them?

Spring Dart League Season

Pertaining to the Santa Clara Valley Darts Association:

The Spring Season will begin Wed-Thu, February 23-24. Deadline for sign-ups will be Friday, February 18. The Membership Meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 15, at 7:30 PM. Place is yet to be determined.

As of late only "A" and "B" level leagues are run. There has been a beginner "C" league according to lore, but fewer interested parties means fewer choices. Teams can be privately formed (pay dues out-of-pocket each year) or sponsored by a particpating pub in the area (You only have to show-up. Drinks are extra ... except at "half-time" that is.)

Anyway, I thought I'd throw this out in case anyone browsing tribes might be interested. More information can be attained by visiting the official SCVDA website:

http://www.scvda.com/

Good game,

Please help - a question about darts

Hello everyone. I am a psychologist at the University of Michigan. One of the things I study is spatial cognition and action. I have a question for you about playing darts, as I am designing a research project on the question. Your input would be greatly appreciated.

Now imagine a dart board. Some of the areas that you throw a dart at are on the XY axis - like the number 20. Other areas are along 'oblique' axes, like 4. Do you find that it is easier to hit the areas that are along the XY axis or along the oblique axis? You see, in spatial cognition, people are much more accurate in remembering a location that is near the XY axes. I am wondering whether this phenomenon holds true for action events, such as throwing a dart. I tried this experiment on myself at a bar the other day, and found that it was true, for me, as an inexperienced dart player, to hit areas near the X and Y but not oblique areas. Any thoughts on this?

Thank you for your time - I appreciate your help.

Sean Duffy

Alright, we've got a quorum. Where's the best place to play?

Glad to already see three members here, looks like my new tribe Listing is doing the trick! Welcome everybody!

So where do you like to play? What kind of darts? Do you own your own, or use house darts?

Here in Santa Cruz CA, the best place to play is the Poet and Patriot pub. It's where I first learned to play, and received a good "it's not baseball!" scolding at my early attempts to hurl the darts.

You can almost always find a good thrower (perhaps a stranger) to play with at the Poet. With 3 boards in the main dart room and one in another room, award plaques all over the walls and more than a few trophies around, the Poet is serious about darts.

http://www.poetpat.com/

Another place that has a great setup is the 1007 Club, with four very nicely laid out dart lanes, but it's hard to find a pickup game there. Never see many serious players there except for league games.

Here in Santa Cruz we have two leagues, "A" for the top-level, most serious players, "B" for those who take darts a little less seriously but there are still a lot of great players in B league. Steel tip darts only, of course. ;)

The local dart association has a great web site for keeping track of league events, scores, etc. Very well done. Unfortunately it's down at this very moment, but here's the URL anyway:
http://www.sccda.org/

Personally, I find any league competition a little too serious for me, and I've played both in A league and B. Having to show up to matches every week, and *having* to practice, makes it a little to much like work to me. ;)
