Please help - a question about darts

Hello everyone. I am a psychologist at the University of Michigan. One of the things I study is spatial cognition and action. I have a question for you about playing darts, as I am designing a research project on the question. Your input would be greatly appreciated.

Now imagine a dart board. Some of the areas that you throw a dart at are on the XY axis - like the number 20. Other areas are along 'oblique' axes, like 4. Do you find that it is easier to hit the areas that are along the XY axis or along the oblique axis? You see, in spatial cognition, people are much more accurate in remembering a location that is near the XY axes. I am wondering whether this phenomenon holds true for action events, such as throwing a dart. I tried this experiment on myself at a bar the other day, and found that it was true, for me, as an inexperienced dart player, to hit areas near the X and Y but not oblique areas. Any thoughts on this?

Thank you for your time - I appreciate your help.

Hmmm... I don't know if this will be of much help, but I do have an answer! =)

It's easier for me to hit numbers on the Y (vertical axis--20 & 3) than on the X axis, because it's easier to accurately control the left-right trajectory of the dart than it is the vertical, which is where I'm dealing with gravity--I can't aim straight, I must aim slightly above the target for it to "fall" into place--so I'm likely to throw slightly high or low (or too hard or softly), and therefore much more likely to miss my target, if it lies along the X axis.

As far as the oblique numbers, I find numbers near 16 or 18 easier to hit; their "slices of pie" are more in line with the way my arm moves as I throw (down and to the left; I'm right handed). Although I may miss the exact spot I'm aiming for, I'm more likely to hit something in the number, because if I throw high (early), I'm more likely to throw towards the right as well; if I throw low (late), I'm more likely to throw towards the left.

I find 15 and 17 (and upper-left numbers) more difficult to hit, because they are crosswise to to the axis of my throw.

As far as the cognitive psychology goes, I don't see how location memory is relevant, as I'm not throwing at a target I *remember* seeing; I'm looking directly at the target as I throw the dart. There's nothing to forget.

I suppose it might be relevant if I were to look at the target, close my eyes, then throw the dart. That's not my usual game-winning strategy though. =)

Good luck with your study, and feel free to ask any more questions.

You hit the bulls eye - in the study that I am planning, I am having people either aim and throw, or aim, close their eyes, and throw. I find no systematic biases in the open eyes condition, but a bias towards the center of the quadrants formed by the XY axes when the eyes are closed. It is less about memory, though, as it does with online adjustments that happen very rapidly at the point of planning the action. Your point about the gravity problem makes sense, and so far, in the few people I have so far pilot tested (none of them professionals though) are much more accurate in the Y than the X axis. Thanks for your comment - I will look at my data to see if there is a pattern related to your other point about the oblique axis numbers that you mentioned. Thanks again!
