Glad to already see three members here, looks like my new tribe Listing is doing the trick! Welcome everybody!
So where do you like to play? What kind of darts? Do you own your own, or use house darts?
Here in Santa Cruz CA, the best place to play is the Poet and Patriot pub. It's where I first learned to play, and received a good "it's not baseball!" scolding at my early attempts to hurl the darts.
You can almost always find a good thrower (perhaps a stranger) to play with at the Poet. With 3 boards in the main dart room and one in another room, award plaques all over the walls and more than a few trophies around, the Poet is serious about darts.

Another place that has a great setup is the 1007 Club, with four very nicely laid out dart lanes, but it's hard to find a pickup game there. Never see many serious players there except for league games.
Here in Santa Cruz we have two leagues, "A" for the top-level, most serious players, "B" for those who take darts a little less seriously but there are still a lot of great players in B league. Steel tip darts only, of course. ;)
The local dart association has a great web site for keeping track of league events, scores, etc. Very well done. Unfortunately it's down at this very moment, but here's the URL anyway:

Personally, I find any league competition a little too serious for me, and I've played both in A league and B. Having to show up to matches every week, and *having* to practice, makes it a little to much like work to me. ;)

Re: SCCDA web site
Mon, November 10, 2003 - 11:16 AMWell Eric, I have to say, having played at the Poet several times, I would agree, it is a great place to play darts. However, I would have to say that the best I've played in (besides MGM grand in Vegas) would have to be either the Sportsman, or Chippers in Monterey. They are just set up to play darts. Very nice. As far as the leagues go, I was in the Gold League in Monterey For about 6 years, but had to quit this session because of work. -

Re: SCCDA web site
Mon, November 10, 2003 - 4:41 PMThe only place I've played in Monterey is the Chess & Dart Club. Also a good serious darts place but not my favorite atmosphere. That's where I bought my darts and is a good place to get new steel points put on your darts when they wear out.
The guy who runs the place is an interesting character, too. I don't know of too many people who keep track of how many 180's they get per week (I've only gotten one in my life, and it was not in a game). -

Re: SCCDA web site
Sat, December 13, 2003 - 7:40 PMThe Chess and Dart Club is closed...he got bought out by the City of Monterey, I think they want to make it some sort of club. I think its ridiculous. So many people have walked through those doors and learned a great deal from Ted (the owners name). He's a great teacher with lots of experience in darts, chess, and everything else. Just and FYI -

Re: SCCDA web site
Mon, December 15, 2003 - 5:05 PMThat's a real shame. It didn't seem like the kind of place that would last forever, though.

Re: Alright, we've got a quorum. Where's the best place to play?
Thu, October 30, 2003 - 8:00 PMI always like playing at 99 Bottles myself. The dart boards are located upstairs and away from the crowd and noise. Not to mention that the beer is good.
I never done league playing but I can hold my own when I have practiced enough. Mostly, I just like playing crickett. -

Re: Alright, we've got a quorum. Where's the best place to play?
Mon, November 10, 2003 - 4:45 PMHmmm... well I think it's pretty hard to find a pick-up game at 99, though I've played for fun there a couple of times I've been there for parties and someone else in the group wanted to play darts.
The season I played A league, 99 Bottles was actually our team sponsor, and it was very hot up there, and when we played "home" games, we always had to hang a jacket or something in front of the the air conditioner, because it would blow the darts off-target! -

Re: Alright, we've got a quorum. Where's the best place to play?
Wed, November 12, 2003 - 3:05 PMHello people. I'm a dart player from San Francisco. Two places in the city that have great groups are "The Little Shamrock" at 9th and Lincoln on a Friday night, or "TK's" on West Portal on a Saturday night. At TK's on Saturday nights they have a blind draw doubles 501. $4 to play, double elimination best 2 out of 3 games per round. It's a lot of fun, mystery draw for the outs that night and a lot (10-20) of people to play with, I've been there so many times, met so many people that know the game better than myself that it is worth the trip up here if you can make it. There are leagues up here too, so there are many bars in the city to play. More info: sfdarts.org -

Re: Alright, we've got a quorum. Where's the best place to play?
Mon, December 15, 2003 - 7:50 AMActually Jelly, Monterey isn't gonna make it anything. The building is going to be condemned until they can get it approved through the historical society to tear it down. -

Mon, December 15, 2003 - 5:47 PMIntresting....good to know. Thanks for the FYI Tommy. I do agree with you on your earlier reply, Chippers is a great comfortable place to play :)
